The Multiethnic Football Tournament has been run in Upper Hutt for 11 years now, and is a great place for anyone to come along and meet new people and represent their country or culture. We work with Sportzone, who are very experienced at running football events, to create a two-weekend tournament for teams to compete. The winners of the women’s and men’s divisions are sent to play in the New Zealand Communities Football Cup in Auckland, and Upper Hutt has always been represented proudly at the national level.
This September the Tournament was held at Griffin Park in Heretaunga, and saw over 20 teams competing. The first Saturday was a gorgeous day, perfect for football, and the fields were
humming with people. The finals were held the following Saturday, unfortunately with heavy rain threatening most of the day, and finally letting loose toward the prize-giving. The players were not fazed in the slightest, and a passionate final between Somalia and the Seyclean Sudakas from South America was won by Somalia.
Although we had a great tournament, and love getting the teams involved, we would love to see more women out their on the field, and will be working toward holding a separate tournament for them next year. Start training ladies, Upper Hutt wants to see what you’ve got!
